Everybody wants to feel safe at home – it’s human nature. However, is it possible to install security cameras in small apartments?

The answer to this is not as clear as you may think. This is because there are several factors you need to consider before heading down to your local store and picking up the first camera that you see.

This blog post will discuss more on security cameras for small apartments and the many factors you need to consider.

Is your apartment rented?

Firstly, if your apartment is rented, then you should approach management before installing any cameras.

Second, the apartment complex may already have a range of cameras installed. However, generally, you cannot install outdoor cameras as this is a breach of privacy for your neighbors.

On the other hand, you may be able to install indoor security cameras – more on this below.

Ask permission

Once again, you’re going to need to ask permission (especially if you have a roommate). If you get the green light to install an indoor security camera, you should position it to a key entry point.

For example, you don’t want the camera to have a view of your entire apartment. That’s just creepy. And, well, not very effective, either.

Instead, position the camera to watch a door, window, or other entry points. You may require at least two well-positioned indoor cameras for optimal coverage.

Less is often more when it comes to security cameras for small apartments

Okay, now that you’ve got permission, you need to decide what cameras to purchase.

Our one main piece of advice would be that less is more when it comes to apartment security. You don’t need coverage of your entire apartment, as previously mentioned.

Consider setting up one camera, to begin with, then perhaps a second only if required. This will save you money, allow roommates and others to feel more at ease, but still get the job done, providing you with coverage in the event of an intrusion.

To finish

Security cameras for small apartments is a little bit of a strange topic. You should always talk to management before installing any type of camera to ensure this is legal and allowed.

As we mentioned in this blog post, you are likely only going to be able to install an indoor camera. However, that should be plenty, especially if the apartment building already has its own security installed.
